PLATFORM FOR REFERRAL OF PREGNANT WOMEN IN TOGO
To improve referral and counter-referral of women receiving emergency obstetric and neonatal care in the Kara region and the Mô district.
Project start date : 01/09/2019
Last updated : 20/09/2023
Beneficiary country : Togo
What problem does the initiative address ?
In Togo, maternal mortality is estimated at 401/100,000 live births. In the Kara region, poor conditions for referring women to emergency obstetric and neonatal centres (SONU) are contributing to the increase in deaths of women in labour and following childbirth.
Since September 2019, the Direction Régionale de la Santé (DRS) of the Kara region has set up an electronic platform called “WhatsApp-DRS Kara-SONU” to manage women’s referrals to SONU in the Kara region. However, the deployment of the platform has not been evaluated.
Detailed description of the initiative
This project was the subject of a study as part of a doctoral research project initiated by Dr Sibabe Agoro and supported by the Centre de Formation et de Recherche en Santé Publique de l’Université de Lomé (CFRSP) in Togo.
What is the proposed solution added value ?
It uses an easy-to-use digital medium (Android supported) available to staff at a reduced cost. This will eventually enable an electronic system to be set up to monitor patients throughout their care. This solution will enable better management of referrals and counter-referrals for pregnant women, and ultimately reduce their morbidity and mortality.
