TIC et éducation inclusive (Dico Sign_1.0)
Achieving inclusive education for the deaf and hard of hearing through the integration of ICT
Project start date : 28/05/2013
Last updated : 16/03/2022
Beneficiary country : Burkina Faso
What problem does the initiative address ?
The problem: Challenges of deafness, and especially the lack of communication due to deafness.
Detailed description of the initiative
The software, called Dico Sign_1.0, is a didactic and educational tool that aims to help sign language (LdS) speakers to improve their communication.
Usage: when a word present in the database is typed then validated, the corresponding illustration appears and shows a filmed animation of the corresponding sign, as well as a drawing. A quiz has been integrated with Dico Sign_1.0 to make learning LdS more fun. The primary beneficiaries are deaf and hard of hearing learners, their parents, their teachers and pupils in inclusive schools. Other groups concerned are actors in the world of disability and anyone interested in this sign language.
The use of ICT makes it possible to improve the situation of people with disabilities and promotes the exercise of their human rights, such as rights to education and information. The CEFISE, through the promotion of the Dico Sign_1.0 software, ensures large-scale access to quality inclusive education, integration of the deaf and hard of hearing as well as people living with another disability.
The project is taking place in the Centre region in Ouagadougou. It is opening up to partner organisations (Schools of the Deaf) throughout Burkina Faso and the West African subregion.
What is the proposed solution added value ?
ICT enables innovation through educator training and facilitates learning for the target audience.

CEFISE/Benaja
The Centre for Integrated Education and Training of the Deaf and Hearing (CEFISE/Benaja) was created in December 1988 following authorisation N ° AN VI-0364/FP-SAN-AS/SEAS/DRS. The Centre is a component of CEFISE-Benaja, recognised as a development NGO in 1993, which operates in six (6) regions of Burkina Faso: Centre, Centre-Sud, Sud-Ouest, Centre-Nord, Nord and Plateau Central. The CEFISE has opened specific services for support, awareness and screening for the benefit of its target audience and the populations of Burkina Faso: Audiology, Speech and Language Therapy, and Psychology of Education. The CEFISE’s specificity as a school in the field of inclusive education in Francophone West Africa is that: – At the primary level, deaf, hard of hearing and hearing pupils learn together in the classroom, with only one teacher who takes the lesson and simultaneously translates into conventional sign language; – In secondary schools, teachers are assisted by professional sign language interpreters (LdS); – At the national level, the CEFISE is a reference centre for training in sign language. It is considered as a resource structure, which the State of Burkina Faso consults for the promotion of inclusive education.
