Web and Mobile application connecting patients with pharmacies and testing labs
Project start date : 02/03/2018
Last updated : 15/04/2024
Beneficiary country : Mali
What problem does the initiative address ?
Despite important progress in the world over the last decades, maternal and neonatal mortality remains very high and this is particularly worrying in Mali with 368 maternal deaths for 100,000 live births and 34 neonatal deaths for 1,000 live births according to the results of the l’EDSMV 2012.
The majority of these deaths are attributable to many causes, the majority of which could be avoided. Among these multiple causes are: insufficient medical staff in both quantity and quality and inaccessibility to qualified healthcare centres and to healthcare professionals.
The economic development of the nation relies on the health of its population. It is therefore important to guarantee a good health system for the population by sharing scientific research, technologies and innovation for a harmonious durable development.
In Mali, patients are confronted with difficulties in acquiring prescribed medication and fast access to testing labs.
In fact, a previous study concerning the medical-economic benefits of using a mobile application in access to medication for hospitalised patients showed that:
Without the application, those accompanying the sick people visit on average 2.28 pharmacies, in 120 minutes and spend 1593.02 FCFA [franc CFA] before getting all of their prescription;
While those accompanying the patients who use the application visit on average 1.26 pharmacies, in 37 minutes and 67 seconds and spend 709.30 FCFA.
Similarly, the majority of analyses are not feasible in hospital laboratories. Therefore, patients must go to testing labs in the city. Patients end up doing a tour of the city looking for a laboratory that can do their analysis. In this context, several of these patients spend a lot of money travelling around and they lose a lot of time trying to carry out the analysis.
All of this can have serious repercussions namely, complications or even death in an emergency.
Detailed description of the initiative
The solution is a Web: www.kosante.org; and Mobile application downloadable free of charge on Play store, allowing patients to:
Quickly find medication in case of emergency
The patient enters the name of the drug in the application and finds the closest pharmacies that have the drug available at time T as well as a precise geolocation.
The Patient has the possibility of ordering medicines online and receiving delivery from the delivery team in record time.
Finding the appropriate laboratory to carry out analyses.
The patient enters the name of the analysis in the application and finds the laboratories in which it is feasible as well as the price of the analysis and how long it will take to obtain the results.
It offers the patients the possibility to make an appointment with the laboratory and to receive the results of the analysis online.
This application is easy to use and free for the patient. It allows the patient to: reduce the duration and the cost of acquiring pharmaceutical products and to carry out additional examinations; it also contributes to reducing the risks of complications and deaths in a hospital environment.
What is the proposed solution added value ?
It is in this context that KOSANTE references pharmacies and their available stocks as well as analytical laboratories.
