What problem does the initiative address ?
The initiative addresses the main element involved in household healthcare: medicines. It creates savings for families while enabling them to increase their solvency through the solidarity savings programme, and CSR sponsorship for private sector companies
Detailed description of the initiative
Medicines are expensive and many people simply do not have access to them… However, after the treatment is finished, boxes or whole packets are left to expire in the family medicine cabinet… This situation is a financial loss for the individual but especially for the community, because neighbours or disadvantaged people could certainly have used these drugs before they went out of date. After a research project, the JokkoSanté team realised that for Senegalese households, 52% to 73% of health spending goes on medicines. It is therefore the most important health cost item. As a result, a large proportion of the population does not have health insurance coverage (IPM, Insurance, CMU) or their insurance does not cover or only partially covers medicines. All this makes access to medicines difficult and above all, unfair. There are benefactors and NGOs that offer medicines, companies that donate medicines as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies, but these donations have no traceability and donors have no idea where their donations go.JokkoSanté was created to solve all these difficulties. It is a secure web and mobile application that offers more impartial access to medicines through three complementary mechanisms: the circular economy, cross-financing and internet exchange points.1. Circular economy: the idea is to transfer the medicine cabinet from within the family to within the community. So, instead of keeping unused (and not expired) medicines at home, members of Jokko$anté drop them off at participating health centres and in exchange, receive points on their mobile phone. These points are equivalent to the financial value of the medicines they donate. The accumulated points can be used by members to obtain other medicines when they have a new prescription. Through this project, Jokko$anté is fighting against self-medication and the illicit sale of medicines.2. JokkoSanté is a cross-financing initiative that provides companies with the opportunity to improve their visibility and social impact by funding medicines for the population segments of their choice (depending on their place of residence, age, gender, etc.). This visibility of their CSR activities is guaranteed, because the beneficiary member automatically receives an SMS informing him that it is “company X” who covered the costs of his or her prescription. A voice call is also scheduled two days after the medicines have been issued, to inquire about the patient’s health and measure the impact.3. Purchase and exchange of points: members of Jokko$anté can exchange points and it is also possible to buy points.
