Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP)
The development of epidemiologic capacity among Ministry of Health staff
Project start date : 12/06/2016
Last updated : 16/03/2022
Beneficiary country : Sierra Leone
What problem does the initiative address ?
Effective disease detection, investigation, control, and prevention requires a public health workforce well-trained in the principles and practices of field epidemiology.
Detailed description of the initiative
Recognizing that effective disease detection, investigation, control and prevention requires a public health workforce well-trained in the principles and practice of field epidemiology, eHA, with support from Afinet, is conducting the Field Epidemiologists Training Program (FETP) throughout Sierra Leone. Through FETP eHA is helping to build epidemiologic capacity among Ministry of Health staff, allowing them to conduct effective surveillance, case investigation, outbreak investigation, and response. Workforce development and capacity building is critical to the sustainability of eHA’s projects. In order to ensure our tools’ continued use and effectiveness beyond the end of our involvement, local governments require a highly skilled healthcare labor force trained to maintain systems that improve health delivery in the long run, including tools developed and implemented by eHA. Therefore, in addition to FETP training, eHA conducts capacity-building workshops in courses that range from basic Excel to Linux administration and software development, and from basic data entry to advanced public health emergency management in each of our operating countries.
What is the proposed solution added value ?
This solution supports the development of a specific skill-set which has been deemed underdeveloped among medical professionals in Sierra Leone.
