What problem does the initiative address ?
Detailed description of the initiative
Biocon Foundation has continually invested in ICT-enabled process innovations in order to build sustainable primary healthcare systems. The eLAJ Smart Clinic platform, developed in-house, is designed to strengthen the delivery of primary healthcare in India. eLAJ-enabled care is an electronic patient record system in a secure network, coupled with easy-to-use, point-of-care and upgraded laboratory-based diagnostics. This platform enables evidence-based practice and ensure quality improvement in dispensing targeted, need-based care to the patients. As vitals are captured at registration, the eLAJ process enables opportunistic screening of non-communicable diseases.
A dashboard enables visualisation and analytics of the clinical and administrative data in real-time. The operational details such as new patient registration, consultations and lab observation reports allow the remote tracking of service utilization. The cross-sectional analytical aspects of the dashboard enable comparison of data across multiple variables for clinical improvements and patient-centred outcomes.
eLAJ Smart Clinics conduct monthly specialised camps. These camps provide coordinated community-based services free of charge. The NCD camp provides a broad array of services, including screening, diagnosis and management of type-2 diabetes, hypertension and associated microvascular complications (neuropathy and retinopathy) and common cancers. In addition, the clinics also deal with woman, child and geriatric health issues. The counselling and home visits for follow up reduce behaviour risk factors and augment medication adherence.
This software application has experienced a positive acceptance by healthcare providers at all levels. The eHealth platform has ensured that the patient receives a continuing and consistent level of care.
Government of Karnataka signed a memorandum of understanding with Biocon Foundation to integrate eLAJ into the operations of Primary Health Centres (PHCs). The intervention is currently serving a population of more than one million across 7 districts in Karnataka, India.
